VISION
Sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control, this study was designed as a comparison group for the AIDSVAX study.
Participants were recruited who demographically and behaviorally matched the participants in AIDSVAX who stayed involved over a similar period of time, but who received neither vaccine nor placebo. Using computer-assisted interviews and focus groups, Vision addressed the following questions:
- Did participating in the AIDSVAX trial change the sexual risk behavior and decision-making among the volunteers?
- What factors influence a trial site's ability to recruit and retain participants?
- Does the AIDSVAX product produce an antibody response at points of sexual exposure, such as the penis, vagina and mouth?
- Are participants who become infected with HIV during the trial referred to and able to gain access to quality medical care?
- Do those participants who became HIV infected have strains of the virus that are resistant to various HIV treatments?
Results from this study will be available later this year.
