HVTN PROTOCOL 403

Although most volunteers in vaccine studies tend to reduce sexual risk behavior, some participants in HIV vaccine studies do become HIV infected during their participation.

This infection is not due to the vaccine itself, as it is impossible to get HIV from the vaccine. Rather, it's due to an HIV exposure that happened outside of the study.

HVTN 403 is designed to teach us whether immune response in people who become HIV infected after receiving vaccine may help protect against HIV disease.

This study is aimed at providing intensive, long-term evaluation of the viral characteristics, immune responses and clinical parameters of candidate vaccine or placebo recipients who become HIV-1 infected after enrollment in Phase I and Phase II vaccine trials or vaccine preparedness cohorts.

The study will last 60 months per participant and is ongoing.
