Most of the vaccine studies we conduct here in the HIV Research Section are in Phase I or Phase II of testing -- meaning the studies are very small, testing for safety and for their ability to create an immune response. At these stages, most vaccine products exist solely as study protocol numbers.
Each of these products is an important step on the way to a safe and effective vaccine. These studies help us determine the best dose and timing for giving these vaccines. If a product doesn't create as strong an immune response as was hoped, the vaccine may be redesigned, or a component of another product may be added to the original formulation.
One of the largest HIV vaccine trials ever conducted.
A follow up study of the VaxGen Trial.
